What counts as a roofing emergency

Not every roof problem needs someone out the same day. These do:

  • Water actively coming into the house, through a ceiling, down a wall or around a light fixture
  • A fallen tree or large limb on the roof, whether or not you can see a hole from inside
  • A section of roofing gone after high wind, leaving underlayment or bare decking exposed
  • An ice dam leaking into a living space, usually showing up as a wet patch near an exterior wall
  • Storm damage to flashing or a chimney that has opened a path into the structure

If you are not sure whether what you are looking at is urgent, call and describe it. Some of these can wait for a scheduled repair, and we will tell you if yours can.

What we do on an emergency call

The first job is to stop water getting in. That is not always the same as fixing the roof.

An active leak is the clearest case. We find the entry point, secure it with a tarp or temporary cover, and clear anything making it worse, like a limb still resting on the roof or a blocked valley holding water. We photograph the damage before we cover it, because once a tarp is on nobody can see what was underneath, and those photos matter if you file a claim.

A temporary repair buys you a dry house, not a finished roof. Then we schedule the permanent repair, because temporary protection is exactly that, and it is not meant to sit through a winter.

What to do before we get there

Contain the water and stay safe. Put a bucket or bin under the drip and move furniture and anything that matters out of the area.

If a ceiling is bulging, do not stand under it. A sagging ceiling is holding water and it can come down all at once. If water is running near light fixtures, ceiling fans or outlets, turn that circuit off at the panel.

Take photos from inside. Then leave the roof alone. Wet roofing is slippery, storm-damaged roofing is structurally unreliable, and more people are hurt after a storm than during one.

Emergency repairs and insurance

We document, your insurer decides. That is the honest division of labour.

What we can do is give you a clear record: photos of the damage, photos of the temporary protection, and a written description of what failed and what we did. Most policies require you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage once you are aware of it, so securing the roof promptly generally works in your favour.

We do not tell you what your policy covers or what to say to your insurer. If the damage came from a storm, storm damage roof repair covers how we document it in more detail.

Response across Albany and the Capital Region

We take emergency calls for Albany, Troy, Schenectady, Saratoga County and the surrounding towns. How quickly we can reach you depends on where you are and what the weather is doing, so call and we will tell you honestly when we can be there rather than quoting you a response time we cannot keep.

After the emergency

Once the house is dry, the real question is whether the roof needs a repair or a replacement. A single point of failure on an otherwise sound roof is a repair. Widespread wind damage, or a roof already near the end of its life, is usually a replacement conversation.

We will tell you which one you are looking at, and show you the photos that led us there.

Water damage does not stop at the ceiling, either. Once water is inside, it moves into insulation, framing and drywall, which is the main reason an active leak is worth treating as urgent rather than scheduling it for next week.

If water is coming in right now, call (518) 535-7583.

Emergency roof repair: common questions

What counts as a roofing emergency?

Water actively coming into the house, a tree or limb through the roof, a section of roofing blown off in a storm, or an ice dam leaking into a living space. If water is getting in now, that is an emergency. A single missing shingle with no leak usually is not, and can be scheduled as a normal repair.

What should I do before you arrive?

Move what you can out of the way and put a bucket under the drip. If a ceiling is sagging or bulging, stay out from under it, and if water is anywhere near light fixtures or outlets, shut that circuit off at the panel. Take photos of what you can see from inside. Do not go up on the roof.

Do you tarp roofs?

Yes. When a permanent repair cannot be done immediately because of weather, darkness or the size of the damage, we secure the area with a tarp or temporary cover so the inside stays dry, then schedule the permanent repair.

Will insurance cover an emergency repair?

That is your insurer's decision, not ours. What helps a claim is documentation, so we photograph the damage before and after we secure it. Most policies expect you to prevent further damage once you know about it, which is what a temporary cover does.
