Roofing for every kind of Capital Region home
Housing around Albany covers a lot of ground, and each type of house has its own weak spots:
- Postwar ranches and Capes in Colonie, Latham and Delmar often have undersized attic ventilation, which shows up as ice dams and early shingle wear.
- Colonials and split-levels in the suburbs usually have valleys and step flashing at walls that deserve careful attention during a replacement.
- Brick rowhouses in Albany, Troy and Cohoes typically have flat or low-slope roofs behind parapet walls, where membrane roofing and flashing details matter most.
- Victorian and early 20th century homes may have steep slopes, dormers, turrets and original slate that needs a roofer who knows how to repair it without breaking more.
What we do for homeowners
Roof replacement. Complete tear-off, decking repair, ice and water shield, underlayment, new flashing, ventilation and a new roof, itemized in a written estimate.
Roof repair. Leaks, flashing, missing shingles, ice dam damage, fascia and trim. We find the cause and fix it, with photos.
Asphalt shingle roofs. The most common roof on Capital Region homes, installed as a full system rather than just shingles.
Metal roofing. Standing seam and panel roofs that last longer and shed snow, with snow guards where people walk.
Flat roofs. EPDM and TPO on porches, additions, garages and rowhouse roofs.

Signs your home’s roof needs attention
- Water stains on ceilings or in the attic
- Shingles that are curling, cracked or missing
- Granules collecting in the gutters or at downspouts
- Ice dams or long icicles along the eaves every winter
- Daylight visible through the roof boards in the attic
- A sagging ridge or soft spots along the roof
If you are seeing any of these, a free inspection tells you where you stand. See repair or replace your roof for help deciding between the two.
Ventilation, insulation and ice dams
Many ice dams we see on Albany-area homes aren’t a roofing failure at all. Warm air leaks into the attic, melts the snow on the roof and the water refreezes at the cold eaves. New shingles won’t fix that on their own. During a replacement we check soffit intake and ridge exhaust and point out attic air leaks, so the new roof isn’t fighting the same problem.
Gutters, fascia and trim
Rotted fascia and overflowing gutters usually show up during a roof job. Because we come from general contracting, we replace damaged fascia and trim as part of the roof work, add drip edge where it’s missing, and make sure water off the new roof ends up in the gutter and away from the foundation.
Permits and neighborhood rules
Most full roof replacements in Capital Region towns need a building permit, and some neighborhoods have homeowners’ association or historic district rules about materials and color. We check both before we quote, so there are no surprises after you’ve picked a shingle.
Older homes
Older Capital Region homes bring more flashing work than modern houses: original masonry chimneys, porch roofs meeting walls, dormers, and additions built at different times. Those junctions are where water gets in, and they are where we spend the time. If your home has a slate roof, that needs a slate specialist rather than a general roofer, and we will tell you so rather than work outside what we do.
Before you hire anyone
How to choose a roofing contractor covers insurance, written estimates and the red flags worth knowing. Repair or replace your roof helps you work out which one you actually need, and what a roof replacement costs explains the pricing.
Residential roofing: common questions
Do I need to be home while you replace the roof?
No, as long as we can reach the property and an outdoor outlet if needed. We walk through the plan with you before the start date and send photos when the job is done.
What roofing material is best for a house around Albany?
For most homes, architectural asphalt shingles give the best balance of cost, looks and durability. Metal costs more up front and lasts longer, and it sheds snow well. Low-slope sections need a membrane such as EPDM. We will explain the options for your roof.
Will you protect my yard and landscaping?
Yes. We cover plants and landscaping near the house, place the dumpster to avoid damage, and do a magnetic sweep for nails when the job is done.
